Cliffside House

Carved into the cliff edge of a beautiful New Zealand beach, this home embraces its coastal setting with expansive views towards the water. The lighting design takes a contemporary yet elegant approach, complementing the bold architecture while enhancing its connection to the landscape.

Finishes
Black powder-coated linear fittings trace the ceiling edges, with a black diffuser creating a subtle trim when unlit and allowing the fittings to recede into the architecture. The finish complements the dark timber and black architectural metalwork, becoming an integrated part of the ceiling detail. Wrapping the interior perimeter of each floor, the linear fittings create a continuous visual transition between the interior and exterior.

Design Intent
The design centers on preserving the site’s views through a restrained, non-intrusive lighting approach. Star-like miniature downlights, warm linear profiles and concealed track lighting integrate with the dark timber ceiling and architectural angles, creating soft, directed light throughout the home. Wall washing and track-mounted spots bring warmth and depth to the darker front areas, preventing them from feeling cavernous while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere
Exterior
Our scope extended outdoors to include the landscape lighting, continuing the lighting language established within the home. A cascading staircase leads from the house down towards the beach, with integrated step lights guiding the journey. Concealed linear lighting sits behind the site’s hedging, allowing a soft glow to filter through, while miniature lights recessed into the pavers extend the star-like quality of the interior into the landscape.
Defined Moments
A key feature of the home is the lower-level bar, crafted from semi-transparent stone and internally illuminated to reveal warm, cloud-like patterns within the material.
Rather than introducing a hanging fixture above the benchtop, a recessed ceiling chandelier was integrated into the architecture. Carefully positioned miniature downlights evoke the glistening reflections of light across the surrounding water while providing focused task lighting. Through lighting control, the chandelier introduces subtle shimmer and movement, creating a dynamic feature that responds to the coastal setting.

Outcome
This project saw our team’s work featured on Grand Designs New Zealand, including a studio shoot and an onsite interview with Tom Webster. It was an exciting opportunity and a privilege to showcase the project and our lighting design, which aired on television in 2024.
“We have used Sam to assist us with lighting calculations and modelling for some of our projects. Sam is extremely professional and always delivers on the timeframes set.”
