Soft Dwelling
We were tasked with creating a lighting scheme that responds to the challenges of vestibular migraines, developing a space that is comfortable and supportive for occupants.
Custom Wall Light
A custom wall-mounted fixture was developed to evoke the soft glow of candlelight, using diffused plastic tubing to create a flame like effect. Designed specifically for the space, it integrates with the surrounding finishes and reinforces a warm, intimate atmosphere, rather than relying on off the shelf lighting solutions.
Design Intent
The design prioritized diffused and indirect lighting to create a calm, visually gentle environment, achieved through elements such as a ceiling coffer detail that conceals and softens the light source. Task and functional areas are still supported with more focused lighting where needed, balancing comfort for vestibular sensitivities with everyday practicality.
Colour Temperature
The lighting palette is intentionally centered around exceptionally warm colour temperatures, with all lighting tunable from 1800K to 3000K. Custom amber, single-wavelength wall lights (above) further reinforce this warm, gentle quality of light, creating a softer visual atmosphere throughout the home.
Lighting Control
The entire lighting system is wirelessly controlled via Philips Hue and a Bluetooth mesh network, allowing the colour temperature and intensity of the lighting to be easily adjusted to suit different times of day, activities, and sensory needs.
